Hurricane Preparedness

As we have entered Hurricane season it is important to make sure you are prepared!  Now is the perfect time to ensure the safety and well-being of our beloved furry family members in the face of emergencies or unexpected situations.  When was the last time you have evaluated your emergency plan and update your emergency supplies for your furry family members?

As responsible pet owners, it's our duty to be prepared and equipped to handle any challenges that may come our way. Here are a few key steps to keep in mind during hurricane season and beyond:  

1. Create an emergency kit: Assemble a pet-specific emergency kit that includes essential supplies such as food, water, medications, first aid supplies, a leash, and comfort items. Store it in an easily accessible location that you can access or grab and go 

2. Update identification and microchip information: Ensure your pet's identification tags are up to date with current contact details. Consider microchipping your furry family members as a reliable backup, and remember to keep your contact information associated with the microchip updated.  

3. Develop an evacuation plan: Prepare a detailed plan in case you need to evacuate your home. Identify pet-friendly shelters, hotels, or friends and family who can accommodate you and your pets. Practice the evacuation plan to minimize stress during an actual emergency.  

4. Arrange a pet care network: Establish a network of trusted individuals, such as neighbors, friends, or relatives, who can assist with your pets if you are unable to do so during an emergency. Share important information about your pet's needs and routines with them.  

5. Familiarize pets with carriers, restraints, muzzles, etc. Help your pets become comfortable with their carriers or crates, as they may be necessary during evacuation or transportation. Practice getting them used to harnesses, seatbelts, and even muzzles in case of an emergency. 

6. Stay informed and aware: Stay updated on potential hazards or emergencies that could impact your area. 

7.  Keep your pet up to date on veterinary care: Schedule routine veterinary visits to ensure your pets are healthy and up to date on vaccinations. Discuss emergency preparedness with your veterinarian and seek their guidance on specific needs or considerations for your pets.

Now is the time to prioritize the safety and well-being of our furry family members. By taking proactive steps and staying prepared, we can provide them with the care and protection they deserve, even during challenging times.
